Even if you have had experience sequencing Dubstep music in a digital platform, there are still key elements that can “up” your production’s value. But, before we can say that, there are still other elements that must be considered to really reach that “next” level.
As you can see, Dubstep is not just about putting your instruments together to create a beat. There is so much more to it than that. You can make a track that is original and catchy. Without further delay, let’s get to the point.
1. Reverb and its effects
Reverb is always good, except when it comes alongside your samples. It is not a good idea to add samples to your mix if it has reverb on it. If this is the case, then turn it off. Although this is not a standard practice, I’ll explain why you should turn off the reverb. The majority of producers will add some reverb towards the end of their production. However, if your sample already has reverb you can create a double reverb for that sample. This means that the “tail”, or “reverb portion” of the sample could be stretched too far and interfere with other sounds within your track. Reverb should be added at the end to give you maximum control over your track.
2. Try playing with the dynamics
Dubstep isn’t the most difficult music to recreate, so you will want to adjust the dynamics of the instruments. You want to use synths and pads that are slower if your bass is as punchy as Bugs bunny’s crack. As your bass dynamics shifts, and your lead becomes slower, it’s possible to adjust the dynamics of pads or leads to match them. Your music should not be over saturated. The human mind is limited in its ability to distinguish between sounds. Dubstep may be dirty, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you should rap every sound. By comparing the dynamics of each individual instrument in each section of the track, you can easily determine when to make that instrument louder/softer.
3. Try out octaves.
One great Dubstep trick is to change the fourth or eighth notes of a bass line or lead one octave higher, or lower, depending on your goals. This creates an “extra special note” in your production which gives it that extra special touch. Dubstep comes from another dimension. This means you have to appeal to it’s unique and unusual sound signature in order to truly create Dubstep. To give your dubstep that extra edge, you can play with the octaves while creating a sequence.
